Overview

Phenobarbital is a widely used antiepileptic drug, but there is limited data on its side effects in low-income countries. This study assessed side effects in 35 patients with epilepsy taking phenobarbital in rural Zambia. All patients reported at least one side effect, with a median of 6 symptoms. Over half reported sleepiness and dizziness, and 46% reported memory problems and depression. Side effects were not associated with age, gender, or dose. These findings suggest that phenobarbital is associated with a significant burden of side effects in rural Zambia.
