Meditation's Impact on Mental Well-being: Exploring the Benefits of Vipassana
The practice of meditation has gained increasing popularity as a therapeutic tool for promoting mental and emotional well-being. This study delves into the psychological effects of meditation, specifically investigating the impact of Vipassana contemplation training on individuals in Myanmar. The researchers compared a group of 97 individuals engaged in Vipassana meditation with a control group of 81 Myanmar nurses who had no prior experience with meditation. The study employed two validated psychological instruments, the Profile of Mood States (POMS-SF) and the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), to assess mood and psychological flexibility. The results revealed that Vipassana meditation was associated with significant reductions in depressive mood, anger, hostility, and fatigue, while simultaneously increasing levels of vigor. Furthermore, the study found that enhanced psychological flexibility was observed only after practicing meditation for more than a year.
