This study develops a reliable and valid short version of the Udvalg for Kliniske Undersogelser (UKU) to efficiently evaluate the side effects of antipsychotics in patients with schizophrenia. The UKU-short version, containing nine items related to sedation, sleep, rigidity, tremor, akathisia, headache, salivation, constipation, and dizziness, demonstrated good construct and content validity over time. The predictive validity showed that neurological side effects were associated with psychiatric symptoms and quality of life, while drug dosage had negligible effects. The UKU-short is a more time-efficient instrument than the original UKU, but further validation in routine clinical practice is needed.
