Overview

The study assessed the efficacy of mexiletine alone and in combination with a class Ia antiarrhythmic drug for treating ventricular tachycardia (VT) in drug-refractory patients. Mexiletine was effective in 23% of patients, while the combination therapy was effective in 29%. Mexiletine was more effective in patients with nonsustained VT or ventricular fibrillation. While mexiletine therapy was associated with frequent, reversible side effects, combining mexiletine with a class Ia agent may lead to improved arrhythmia-free survival.
