Lavender and Chamomile Aromatherapy: A Potential Boon for Mental Well-being in Older Adults
Mental health issues are prevalent among older adults, prompting a search for effective interventions. This study investigates the effect of lavender and chamomile essential oil inhalation aromatherapy on depression, anxiety, and stress levels in community-dwelling older adults. The authors randomly assigned 183 participants to receive lavender, chamomile, or control aromatherapy for 30 nights, measuring their mental well-being using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress-Scale (DASS). The findings revealed significant improvements in depression, anxiety, and stress levels in both the lavender and chamomile groups compared to the control group, suggesting that aromatherapy may offer a promising complementary approach to addressing mental health concerns in older adults.
