Topical Spironolactone for Acne: A Promising Treatment Option

Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition. Oral spironolactone is a known treatment due to its antiandrogenic properties. This systematic review investigates the efficacy and safety of topical spironolactone in treating acne vulgaris. The review included five clinical trials with 195 patients. The review found that patients treated with topical spironolactone showed a significant decrease in the number of papules, closed comedones, and lesions. Topical spironolactone was more effective than other first-line treatments for acne and showed fewer side effects. The review concludes that further large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of topical spironolactone before it can be used as a preferred treatment for acne.

Dr.Camel's Conclusion

This systematic review provides evidence for the efficacy and safety of topical spironolactone in treating acne vulgaris. The findings suggest that topical spironolactone could be a promising treatment option, offering a more convenient and potentially safer alternative to oral spironolactone. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and establish topical spironolactone as a preferred treatment for acne.
