Overview

Allopurinol is a cost-effective treatment for chronic gout, but can cause skin rashes, diarrhea, and nausea. A serious complication, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, can cause severe illness and death. Although rare, delayed hypersensitivity to allopurinol should be considered in patients with gout who experience skin rashes while on chronic allopurinol treatment.
