Overview

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. While surgery and radiation are effective treatments for many BCCs, advanced BCC (aBCC) is more difficult to treat. The discovery of mutations in the Hedgehog signaling pathway, which is involved in cell growth and development, has led to the development of targeted therapies for aBCC. Vismodegib and sonidegib are two such drugs that have been shown to be effective in treating aBCC, but they can have side effects and may not be effective for all patients. Researchers are working to develop new and improved therapies for aBCC.
