Overview

Loperamide hydrochloride was found to be a safe and effective alternative to bismuth subsalicylate in treating nondysenteric travelers' diarrhea. In a study of 219 students, loperamide resulted in fewer unformed stools compared to bismuth subsalicylate, even in cases of shigellosis. The most common side effect of loperamide was constipation.
