Overview

A study of 320 multiple myeloma patients identified factors predicting overall and tumor-related survival. A 25% reduction in tumor cell mass after primary induction chemotherapy indicated a better prognosis. Pretreatment platelet count, tumor cell morphology, and tumor cell mass were the most reliable prognostic factors. Patients with pretreatment platelet counts ≤150,000 or poorly differentiated myeloma cells had a 50% tumor-related survival of 16 months. Patients lacking both risk factors had 50% survival times of 46 months in stage III and 88 months in stage II.
