Effects of the calcium antagonist felodipine on renal haemodynamics, tubular sodium handling, and blood pressure in cyclosporin-treated dermatological patients.
Author: MadsenJ K, PedersenE B, ZachariaeH
Original Abstract of the Article :
BACKGROUND: Deterioration of renal function and rise in blood pressure are clinically important side-effects of cyclosporin (CsA) treatment. Calcium antagonists may have a renoprotective effect against CsA nephrotoxicity. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of the dihydropyridine calcium-channel blo...See full text at original site

Investigating the Renoprotective Effects of Felodipine in Cyclosporin-Treated Patients
This study delves into the realm of nephrology, specifically examining the effects of the calcium antagonist felodipine on renal function in patients undergoing cyclosporin (CsA) treatment. CsA, a powerful immunosuppressant, is often used in dermatological conditions but can have detrimental effects on kidney function. This research explores whether felodipine can mitigate these adverse effects.
Felodipine's Renoprotective Potential
The researchers studied 18 patients with various dermatological diseases receiving CsA treatment. They were randomly assigned to receive either felodipine 5 mg daily for 4 weeks followed by placebo for 4 weeks, or vice versa. The results demonstrated that felodipine significantly increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal plasma flow (RPF), while decreasing filtration fraction (FF). Furthermore, both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were lower after felodipine compared to placebo.
Felodipine's Positive Impact on Renal Function
This research suggests that felodipine may offer renoprotective benefits in CsA-treated patients. It's like finding a refreshing spring in a desert, offering a potential solution to the adverse effects of CsA therapy.
Dr.Camel's Conclusion
This research is a testament to the importance of finding solutions to the challenges of drug-induced side effects. The potential of felodipine to protect renal function while CsA is being used is a promising discovery. It's like finding a way to navigate a sandstorm, preserving vital organs while managing a difficult condition.
