[Genetic and environmental effects on neuromodulation and the antinociceptive effect of dextromethorphan].
Author: AllazA F, DayerP, DesmeulesJ, OestreicherM K, PiguetV
Original Abstract of the Article :
Administration of NMDA antagonists leads to attenuation or disappearance of some symptoms of central sensitization, such as secondary hyperalgesia. However, the side effects of NMDA antagonists to a large extent counterbalance the expected benefits, thus preventing wide or prolonged use. Dextrometho...See full text at original site

Dextromethorphan: A Promising Antinociceptive with Neuromodulatory Potential
Central sensitization, a phenomenon characterized by heightened sensitivity to pain, is a significant challenge in pain management. This study investigates the antinociceptive and neuromodulatory effects of dextromethorphan, a readily available and safe drug, in pain models. The study examined the effects of dextromethorphan and its metabolite dextrophan in pain models using electrical stimulation for testing antinociceptive effects and capsaicin-induced hyperalgesia. The results revealed that dextromethorphan exhibited clear antinociceptive and neuromodulatory effects. These effects were found to be heavily influenced by the cytochrome P450 2D6 phenotype (CYP2D6), highlighting the importance of considering individual differences in drug metabolism.
Exploring the Potential of Dextromethorphan in Pain Management
This study suggests that dextromethorphan, a commonly available drug, possesses antinociceptive and neuromodulatory properties. Further research is needed to explore its potential as a therapeutic agent for managing chronic pain.A Camel's Perspective: A Journey Through the Sands of Pain
Pain can be a debilitating experience, but finding safe and effective treatments can be like searching for a mirage in the desert. This study provides a glimmer of hope, suggesting that dextromethorphan may offer a novel approach to managing pain.Dr. Camel's Conclusion
This study demonstrates the antinociceptive and neuromodulatory effects of dextromethorphan in pain models. Further research is warranted to explore its potential as a therapeutic agent for managing chronic pain, taking into account individual differences in drug metabolism.Date :
