Overview

This study evaluated a high-dose chemotherapy regimen for treating previously untreated multiple myeloma. Patients received four cycles of VAD chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant after high-dose melphalan. A second transplant was considered for patients who didn't achieve remission after the first high-dose therapy. Patients were then randomized to either interferon alpha-2b maintenance or a combination of interferon alpha-2b and dexamethasone. Of the 35 patients who received the first transplant, 57% achieved complete remission. Common side effects included mucositis requiring parenteral nutrition (40%), and blood transfusions. Early mortality rate was 3%. The study is ongoing and the long-term survival data is not yet available.
