Overview

Studies have shown that some medications can be effective in treating prostate cancer that no longer responds to hormone therapy. These medications include methotrexate, cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, estramustine, CCNU, DTIC, and vinblastine. While combinations of drugs have been studied, diethylstilbestrol (DES) was often more effective when used alone. Combining estramustine with vinblastine was also effective. There was no significant difference in response rates between flutamide and estramustine for men whose cancer returned after hormone therapy. Further analysis is needed to clarify the effectiveness of these treatments, particularly in light of the development of the PSA test.
