Five-year estimates of overall survival, disease-specific survival, and freedom from biochemical failure following radical external beam radiation therapy for early prostate cancer were 85.0%, 95.1%, and 65.8%, respectively. The PSA failure-free rates 5 and 7 years after treatment for patients presenting with a PSA of less than 10 ng/mL were 77.8% and 72.9%. Four separate prognostic groups were identified based on initial PSA level, palpation stage, and Gleason score.

Studies have shown that some medications can be effective in treating prostate cancer that no longer responds to hormone therapy. These medications include methotrexate, cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, estramustine, CCNU, DTIC, and vinblastine. While combinations of drugs have been studied, diethylstilbestrol (DES) was often more effective when used alone. Combining estramustine with vinblastine was also effective. There was no significant difference in response rates between flutamide and estramustine for men whose cancer returned after hormone therapy.
