Overview

This study investigated the impact of adding triiodothyronine (T3) to standard antithyroid drug therapy for Graves' disease. Patients who achieved normal thyroid function were randomly assigned to stop medication, continue T3 with a low dose of methimazole, or continue T3 alone. After 16 months of follow-up, there was no significant difference in relapse rates between the groups (52% for those stopping medication, 44% for T3 with methimazole, and 42% for T3 alone). No factors were found to predict relapse, regardless of the treatment approach.
