Overview

This study compared three treatments for hirsutism (excessive hair growth) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): 1) gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist alone, 2) GnRH agonist plus birth control pills, and 3) GnRH agonist plus flutamide. All three treatments were effective in reducing hair growth. After 6 months, the average hair growth score decreased to 9, 10, and 11 for the three groups, respectively, and remained significantly lower even 6 months after stopping treatment. The combination treatments (GnRH agonist plus birth control or GnRH agonist plus flutamide) resulted in a greater reduction in hormone levels than GnRH agonist alone. The study suggests that these treatments hold promise for future treatment options that target the underlying causes of hirsutism in PCOS.
