Overview

This review of 176 studies on chemotherapy for ovarian cancer found that early-stage, low-risk cancer does not require additional treatment after surgery. For high-risk early-stage cancer, the benefit of chemotherapy is unclear and should be investigated further. Paclitaxel and platinum-based combinations have significantly improved survival in advanced-stage ovarian cancer compared to surgery alone, with paclitaxel/cisplatin considered the standard treatment. However, a large study (ICON3) did not show a significant difference between paclitaxel/carboplatin and carboplatin alone, suggesting that carboplatin may be a viable alternative. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy showed some benefits in one study. High-dose chemotherapy with stem cell support can be effective for relapsed patients, but further research is needed before widespread use. Re-treatment with the same platinum-based drugs may be beneficial for patients with long remission periods. For patients resistant to first-line therapy, various single-agent treatments show limited effectiveness and further study is recommended.
