Overview

A study of 307 patients with early breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and radiotherapy, without axillary or internal mammary lymphatic irradiation, found that local recurrence occurred in 15 patients, with only 4 experiencing persistent symptoms after further treatment. Patients with large, poorly differentiated tumors benefitted most from radiotherapy in reducing local recurrence, with the lowest risk of mortality associated with the treatment.
