A study of 30 patients with narrowed or blocked leg arteries compared balloon angioplasty (BA) to atherectomy (AT) for treatment. Both procedures improved clinical symptoms, but BA had significantly better long-term results in keeping the arteries open. The one-year patency rate (no narrowing greater than 49%) was 77% for BA compared to 25% for AT. Both procedures had a low rate of complications.
