Overview

Chemotherapy can cause nausea and vomiting, which can negatively impact a patient's quality of life. The use of 5-hydroxytryptamine3 (5HT3) antagonists in combination with dexamethasone significantly improved the control of acute nausea and vomiting. The addition of neurokinin1 (NK1) receptor antagonists to this combination further improved control of delayed nausea and vomiting, leading to a 21% improvement in the complete control of delayed nausea and vomiting. This triple drug combination is now the standard of care for preventing nausea and vomiting associated with high-emetic potential chemotherapy drugs.
