Overview

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a multimodality treatment protocol for locally advanced breast cancer, including chemohormonal therapy, surgery, and radiation. The study found that patients with Stage IIIA disease had significantly lower local-regional failure rates compared to patients with Stage IIIB inflammatory cancer (3% vs. 21% at 5 years). Pathologic complete response achieved through chemotherapy did not consistently predict local-regional control. While radiation alone resulted in a higher local-regional failure rate (23% at 5 years) compared to mastectomy and postoperative radiotherapy (5%), the difference was not statistically significant. Overall, patients with Stage IIIA disease had better relapse-free and overall survival compared to patients with Stage IIIB disease.
