Overview

A study of 61 patients with ovarian cancer investigated the effectiveness of high-dose chemotherapy followed by second-look laparotomy (SLL) and subsequent treatment with either cyclophosphamide, abdominal radiation, or no additional therapy. 74% of patients achieved complete remission after high-dose chemotherapy, and 64% of patients who underwent SLL had no evidence of disease. The median survival time for all patients was 51.3 months, however, there was no significant difference in survival between the second-line treatment groups. While high-dose chemotherapy was effective in achieving remission, the long-term survival benefit needs further comparison with traditional low-dose regimens. Despite significant myelosuppression, treatment-related complications were manageable.
