Overview

Lithium as a sole treatment for schizophrenia was not effective in any of the outcomes analyzed in 3 studies. Lithium was less effective than antipsychotics in 8 studies, but more people had a clinically significant response when lithium was used as an augmentation to antipsychotics in 11 studies. However, this statistical significance became borderline when people with schizoaffective disorders were excluded. Lithium augmentation was associated with a lower acceptability compared to antipsychotics alone. There were no differences between groups for adverse events.
