Overview

This study compared standard chemotherapy for elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) to a treatment that included a stem cell transplant from a donor with a different immune system. The study found that the transplant group had a significantly higher complete remission rate (80% vs 43%) and faster recovery from chemotherapy. The transplant group also had a significantly higher rate of long-term survival without the disease (39% vs 10%). No complications from the immune system attacking the patient's body (graft-versus-host disease) were observed. These results suggest that stem cell transplantation alongside standard chemotherapy may be a promising treatment for elderly patients with AML.

Infusion of HLA-Mismatched Peripheral Blood Stem Cells: A Novel Treatment Approach for Elderly AML Patients
