Overview

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system. Most patients with MS experience relapsing-remitting MS. Disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) help to reduce relapses and disability progression. Glatiramer acetate (GA), interferon-beta (INFb)-1a, and INFb-1b are first-line DMDs, but these drugs are given by injections. Because these injections are given frequently, patients miss 30% of doses and 27% discontinue treatment within the first 6 months. More information is needed about the factors that influence a patient's ability to adhere to treatment, so that new treatments for MS can be more effective.
