Overview

This study compared the effectiveness of high-dose and low-dose topical interferon-alpha to placebo for treating recurrent genital herpes in 188 patients. High-dose interferon significantly reduced the time to negative viral cultures (2.5 vs 3.9 days) and shortened the duration of symptoms (2.7 vs. 3.7 days), particularly for women. These benefits were more prominent when treatment was started early in the outbreak, during the prodrome or early symptom stage. The study suggests that high-dose topical interferon-alpha is a safe and effective treatment option for recurrent genital herpes, particularly when applied early in the outbreak.
