Overview

Ribavirin has been shown to be effective against Old World hantaviruses, but its effect on New World hantaviruses has been less studied. This study demonstrates that ribavirin is highly active against Andes virus (ANDV), a major cause of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), both in vitro and in vivo. Treatment with ribavirin prevented lethal HPS in hamsters and suggests its potential benefit for postexposure prophylaxis against HPS-causing hantaviruses.
