Overview

Studies have shown that 5 years of tamoxifen treatment after surgery for early-stage breast cancer in postmenopausal women improves survival. Newer drugs called aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have also been studied, either alone or in combination with tamoxifen. While the best approach is still being determined, AIs have generally shown better outcomes in terms of preventing recurrence, especially in high-risk patients. AIs have also been well-tolerated in the long term, but more research is needed to understand their long-term impact on overall survival.
