Overview

Treating depression in people with bipolar disorder is a challenge. Despite available medications, many people with bipolar disorder spend half their time experiencing depression or other mood problems. There's limited and inconsistent evidence on how well standard treatments, particularly antidepressants, work for this type of depression. While research on antidepressants for bipolar depression is limited, a review suggests that they are more effective than placebos and not less effective than in people with depression who don't have bipolar disorder. The risk of antidepressants causing mood switches (from depression to mania) may be less than previously thought. More research is needed on antidepressants for bipolar depression, including examining different types of bipolar disorder and how best to treat mixed states.
