This review looked at how quickly different acne treatments start to work (time until onset of action, TOA). The study found that different strengths of benzoyl peroxide or adapalene didn't affect how quickly they worked. Benzoyl peroxide appeared to be faster than isotretinoin or tretinoin. Adapalene was faster than isotretinoin. The results for adapalene vs. tretinoin were inconsistent, but adapalene tended to be faster. Clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide was faster than adapalene. Results were inconsistent for clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide vs. benzoyl peroxide alone, but clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide might be slightly faster. Adapalene/benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide had comparable speeds. More research is needed to identify treatments that work quickly and improve patient adherence. Future studies should include time until onset of action as an outcome.
