Antidepressants and Psychological Therapies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis
This meta-analysis examines the effectiveness of antidepressants and psychological therapies in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder. The authors conducted a systematic review of 48 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared antidepressants with placebo or psychological therapies with control therapies. They found that both antidepressants and psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy, multicomponent psychological therapy, and dynamic psychotherapy, were effective in reducing IBS symptoms. The relative risk (RR) of IBS symptoms not improving with antidepressants versus placebo was 0.67, while the RR for psychological therapies was 0.68.
The Promise of Effective Treatment for IBS
The findings suggest that both pharmacological and psychological interventions can be beneficial for individuals with IBS. The study provides strong evidence supporting the use of antidepressants and specific psychological therapies in the management of this challenging condition.
