Overview

This study compared acyclovir cream to a placebo cream for treating recurrent genital herpes in 96 patients. Acyclovir cream significantly reduced the severity and duration of herpes outbreaks, with 59.4% of patients experiencing a benefit compared to 34.4% on placebo. The benefit was even greater when treatment started within four hours of symptom onset. Pain and burning lasted less than four days in 70.8% of patients using acyclovir cream compared to 36.4% using placebo cream. Overall healing time was also significantly shorter with acyclovir. Side effects were similar in both groups, with mild to moderate reactions occurring in 13.5% of patients.
