Overview

This study compared foscarnet cream to placebo in treating 309 patients with recurrent genital herpes. The study found that foscarnet did not significantly reduce the time to healing or symptom relief overall, but more patients were symptom-free after one day of treatment with foscarnet. Foscarnet also significantly reduced the duration of virus shedding in men. However, the study concludes that these benefits are not enough to justify widespread use of foscarnet for established herpes outbreaks. Earlier treatment, during the prodromal phase, might be more effective, but studies of patient-initiated treatment are difficult to interpret due to a higher proportion of culture-negative episodes.
