Overview

This study compared the effectiveness of four different regimens for treating drug-resistant tuberculosis in 501 patients who had failed initial treatment. The regimens included daily treatment with rifampicin and ethambutol (RE7), three times weekly treatment with rifampicin and ethambutol (RE3), three times weekly treatment with rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide (REZ3), and three times weekly treatment with rifampicin, ethambutol, and prothionamide (REPt3). The study found that all regimens were effective, with cure rates ranging from 62% to 79%. The REPt3 regimen had the highest cure rate but also the most side effects. After treatment ended, relapse rates were similar for RE7, RE3, and REZ3 (14-15%), but higher (26%) for REPt3. The study suggests that daily treatment with rifampicin and ethambutol is a good option for treating drug-resistant tuberculosis.
