Overview

Ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, etodolac, diclofenac, and ketorolac are effective in reducing pain after impacted third molar extraction. Combining these NSAIDs with acetaminophen may further improve pain relief and reduce the need for opioids. Opioids are less effective than NSAIDs for postsurgical dental pain and can cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and constipation. Although opioid use carries risks, a short course (1-2 days) can be beneficial for some patients.
