Vitamin D Toxicity from an Unexpected Source

This case report presents two cases of hypervitaminosis D, a relatively uncommon condition, caused by a manufacturing error in a creatine supplement. The authors describe two previously healthy adolescents who presented with acute kidney injury and hypercalcemia. Investigations revealed markedly elevated 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, despite neither patient reporting the use of vitamin D supplements. Further analysis of the creatine supplement revealed a high vitamin D content, exceeding the upper tolerable daily dose by 100 times. Both patients were treated with intravenous hydration, calcitonin, and pamidronate and subsequently maintained normocalcemia. The authors emphasize the importance of considering dietary supplements as a potential source of toxicity, even if they do not explicitly claim to contain vitamin D.

Hidden Dangers in Dietary Supplements

This case report serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with dietary supplements, even those marketed for seemingly benign purposes. The authors highlight the importance of thorough medical history taking, including inquiries about supplement use, to identify potential sources of toxicity.

Ensuring Supplement Safety

This research emphasizes the need for increased vigilance regarding the safety of dietary supplements. Healthcare professionals should advise patients about the potential risks of supplements and encourage them to discuss their supplement use with their physicians. Furthermore, regulatory agencies and manufacturers should prioritize rigorous quality control measures to ensure the safety and accuracy of supplement labeling.

Dr. Camel's Conclusion

Like a desert mirage, the world of dietary supplements can appear deceptively inviting. This case report serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the importance of understanding the potential dangers lurking within these seemingly innocuous products. As we navigate the vast desert of supplement options, we must exercise caution and prioritize safety to ensure our well-being.
