Taming the Immune System: Exploring the Potential of Teriflunomide, IL-27, and Retinoic Acid
This study investigates the potential of pharmacological agents to induce the generation of regulatory T cells (Tregs), immune cells that play a crucial role in suppressing inflammation and maintaining immune homeostasis. The researchers examined the effects of teriflunomide (TER), IL-27, and all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) on the expression of key immunosuppressive molecules on CD8+ T cells, exploring their potential for modulating immune responses.
A Trio of Immunomodulatory Agents: A Quest for Immune Balance
The study found that IL-27 induced CD39 expression on Foxp3+CD25+CD8+ Tregs, while TER induced Foxp3 expression in CD25+CD8+ T cells. However, the combination of TER with IL-27 and/or ATRA did not induce the desired generation of Tregs with extensive CD39 expression and IL-10 production, suggesting that these agents may not be synergistic in this context.
