Overview

A study of 40 patients with recurrent genital herpes found that taking acyclovir (200 mg four times daily) for 84 days significantly reduced the frequency of outbreaks compared to placebo. Only 3 out of 28 patients on acyclovir experienced a recurrence during treatment, compared to 26 out of 28 on placebo. The mean time to the first recurrence was over 84 days for acyclovir and 24 days for placebo. Acyclovir was well-tolerated, with only minor side effects. While acyclovir was effective in reducing outbreaks during treatment, it did not change the natural course of the disease after stopping treatment.
