Overview

Antibiotic-associated colitis, caused by Clostridium difficile, should be considered in any patient developing peritoneal signs while or after receiving antibiotics. Five patients receiving penicillin V potassium or a cephalosporin developed fever, leukocytosis, and right-lower-quadrant peritoneal irritation, requiring emergency laparotomy. Early proctosigmoidoscopy or stool examination may help avoid unnecessary surgery.
