Author: AsaiY, HamadaT, IshiiM
Original Abstract of the Article :
20 patients with distal onychomycosis were given daily application of an ointment containing 2% tolnaftate and an ointment containing 20% urea under ODT. Following this, 17 of 20 patients developed onychomalacia and seven of these developed onycholysis 1 or 2 weeks later. The separated nails were cu...See full text at original site

Treating Onychomycosis: A New Oasis in the Desert of Nail Infections
Imagine a desert of nails, where the fungal infection onychomycosis can leave individuals feeling frustrated and uncomfortable. This study explored a new treatment approach for onychomycosis, using a combination of 20% urea ointment and 2% tolnaftate ointment under occlusion therapy (ODT), a technique that involves covering the treated area with a bandage to increase penetration of the medication.
A Promising Approach to Onychomycosis Treatment
The study showed that ODT with urea and tolnaftate was effective in treating onychomycosis in a significant proportion of patients. The treatment led to onychomalacia, a softening of the nail, and onycholysis, a separation of the nail from the nail bed, in most patients. These findings suggest that the treatment successfully targeted the infected nails, leading to their eventual shedding and replacement with healthy new nails.
Finding Relief from Nail Infections: A New Avenue for Treatment
The results of this study provide a glimmer of hope for individuals struggling with onychomycosis, offering a new and potentially effective treatment option. However, the authors acknowledge that the treatment was not effective for all patients and that further research is needed to optimize the treatment regimen and identify potential side effects.
Dr. Camel's Conclusion
This study, like a desert oasis providing respite from the harsh elements, offers a new avenue for treating onychomycosis. The combination of urea and tolnaftate under ODT appears to be a promising approach, but further research is needed to solidify its efficacy and safety. For those struggling with nail infections, this study provides a glimmer of hope for finding a treatment that can restore healthy nails.
