Oral acyclovir, administered five or two times daily, significantly reduced the frequency and duration of genital herpes recurrences compared to placebo (29% vs. 94% for 5 times daily, 35% vs. 94% for 2 times daily). Acyclovir treatment led to a 50% reduction in recurrence rate for most patients. While not completely preventing recurrences, acyclovir effectively suppressed outbreaks and was well tolerated. The long-term effects on the natural history of the disease require further study.
