Overview

A study of 241 breast cancer patients compared different surgical treatments and adjuvant therapies. Modified radical mastectomy (M) showed better outcomes than partial resection (R) in lymph node-negative patients, but no significant difference was found between M and the classical Halsted procedure (RM) in lymph node-positive cases. Chemotherapy and chemoimmunotherapy did not significantly reduce the recurrence rate in the R group. A separate retrospective study found a high local recurrence rate (23.6%) after breast resection. Based on these findings and data from other studies, the authors recommend modified radical mastectomy as the standard treatment for primary operable breast cancer. Breast-conserving treatments should only be used in controlled clinical trials.
