Overview

This study investigated the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in blood and liver tissue of patients with chronic HCV infection undergoing interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) treatment. While some patients showed improvement in liver function tests (alanine aminotransferase), HCV RNA was still detectable in blood and liver tissue in many of these patients. Notably, all patients who achieved complete and sustained responses to treatment experienced a relapse within 6 months, despite initially showing no detectable virus. These findings suggest that improvement in liver function may not accurately reflect the presence or absence of HCV in the body during IFN-alpha treatment, highlighting the need for additional measures to monitor viral activity.
