Major Research Findings

Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease that affects over 150 million people worldwide. 113 . Infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) can lead to serious complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. 113 . Currently, treatment for hepatitis C involves antiviral drugs such as interferon and ribavirin. 108 61 . However, these treatments can have severe side effects and are not always successful in curing the disease. 61 102 . Therefore, the development of new treatment methods that are more effective and have fewer side effects is crucial. 102 .

Previous studies have shown that interferon is an effective treatment for hepatitis C. 43 23 40 32 37 48 17 20 25 6 13 24 47 42 . However, interferon has strong side effects and its cure rate is not sufficiently high. 23 45 42 . This study investigated the effectiveness of two doses (3 MU and 6 MU) of interferon in treating 60 patients with chronic hepatitis C. About half of the patients (53.3%) experienced normalization of liver enzymes after 6 months of treatment, with no significant difference between the two doses. However, over half of those who initially responded (56.2%) experienced a relapse within 3 months after treatment ended. While the higher dose did not improve response rates, it did lead to more side effects and non-compliance, leading to treatment discontinuation in 10% of patients. Liver histology improved in about 25% of patients, and viral RNA became undetectable in most responders, suggesting that interferon can improve liver function and reduce viral load, despite a high relapse rate.

After two months of treatment, 42% of patients had normalized liver enzymes, while 73% tested negative for HCV RNA. The study suggests that a lack of improvement in liver enzymes within the first two months may indicate a poor response to treatment. This suggests that IFN can eliminate HCV from the bloodstream in some patients, leading to clinical remission of chronic hepatitis C.

These findings suggest that IFN treatment, even without eliminating the virus, may lead to a long-term carrier state with good liver function in some patients.
