Overview

Two studies investigated the effectiveness of different prednisolone dosages and megadose pulsed steroid therapy for ulcerative colitis. In the first study, 24 patients with severe ulcerative colitis were randomly assigned to receive either 1.0 mg/kg or 1.5 mg/kg of prednisolone daily. While there were no significant differences in overall improvement between the groups, the 1.5 mg/kg dosage was more effective in patients experiencing their first attack. The second study involved 13 patients with severe or moderately severe ulcerative colitis receiving megadose pulsed steroid therapy. Ten patients achieved clinical remission, one improved, and two did not respond. Endoscopically, five achieved remission, six improved, and two did not respond. No serious adverse effects or steroid withdrawal syndrome were observed.
