Overview

This review of 80 studies on radiation therapy for lung cancer found that radiation plays an important role in treating various stages of the disease. Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Adding radiation therapy to the primary tumor and surrounding lymph nodes reduces recurrence and improves long-term survival. For early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), surgery is the primary treatment, but radiation can be an alternative for those who can't have surgery. Radiation therapy following surgery for NSCLC has not been proven effective. For more advanced NSCLC, radiation therapy can shrink tumors and extend survival for two and three years, but it's unclear if it improves long-term survival. The benefits of routine radiation therapy for these patients are questionable given the side effects. Radiation is also used to prevent brain metastases in SCLC patients, but this does not improve survival and may lead to complications. In extensive SCLC, radiation therapy is used to relieve symptoms. Radiation therapy can be effective in relieving specific symptoms, such as cough, bleeding, pain, and breathing difficulties.
