In a study of 42 people with bipolar disorder, those experiencing mania were more likely to achieve remission with medication than those with depression (100% vs. 59%). There was no significant difference between the remission rates for those with depression and those with mixed or cycling episodes. While the study did not find a significant effect of the type of non-medication treatment, it suggests that psychotherapy may have a limited impact during the acute phase of bipolar disorder.
