Overview

This study compared different doses and durations of interferon-alpha-n1 treatment for chronic hepatitis C. Overall, 58% of patients became virus-free during treatment, but 8 relapsed within a year, leaving 37% with sustained remission. Patients with non-type 1 hepatitis C genotypes were significantly more likely to achieve sustained remission (63% vs 10.5%). Lower viral load, younger age, no cirrhosis, and higher interferon doses were associated with sustained remission, but these relationships were not statistically significant. Liver biopsy showed improvement in patients with sustained remission.
