Major Research Findings

This study investigated the role of opioid receptors in the mood effects of aerobic gymnastics. Twelve healthy women (aged 22-30 years) were given naltrexone (25 or 50 mg) orally, a medication that blocks opioid receptors. The results showed that opioid receptor blockade eliminated the decreased anxiety, negative affect, and depression as well as increased positive affect observed after a 50-minute session of aerobic gymnastics in a placebo trial. Naltrexone at 50 mg was more effective than 25 mg. Administering 50 mg of naltrexone without exercise did not cause any significant changes in anxiety, positive and negative affect levels, or depression. 1
